TEHRAN -- Majlis Speaker Mahdi Karrubi here on Tuesday urged all domestic political camps to exercise tolerance in order to reinforce national unity and solidarity and said the conditions must be prepared for everyone in society to express their opinion on the state of affairs of the country.

Karrubi, addressing a ceremony to mark the 22nd anniversary of the establishment of University Jihad at Tehran University, said any measure carried out to undermine unity among political camps would basically harm the cause of the Islamic Revolution.

He underscored the need to consider the principles of the Constitution and the aspirations of the founder of the Islamic Revolution, the late Ayatollah Rouhollah Khomeini, in running the affairs of the country, to be the basic elements safeguarding the authority of the system.

Karrubi also said that the country's officials should take the legitimate demands of the people into consideration, cautioning that the system would otherwise suffer.

He said that the landslide election and reelection of President Mohammad Khatami indicated that he enjoys massive public support, but added that this could not exempt the president, like any other official, from being criticized for his performance in office.

Karrubi also highlighted the need to safeguard the success of the Islamic Revolution, and warned of any measures that would harm the cause of the revolution.
